Translation and Commentary on The Martyrdom of Polycarp §7.2

Translation

2 Therefore, after he heard that they were present, he came down he spoke [1] with them. Those present were amazed at his youthfulness [2] and composure, even if there was such great haste to apprehend such an old man as this. So he immediately ordered that something be placed before them to eat and to drink at that time [3] - as much as they desired, so that they might give to him an hour that he might pray fearlessly. [4]

[2] Compare with Germanikos in §3.1. Both are referred to as ???????. The true strength of the martyr then must not be in the physical age of his body, but in the Lord who strengthens us in our weakness.

[3] ??? or hour.

[4] ????? without fear or disturbance (BAGD, 16; see also LSJ).
