Translation

1 After Polycarp had sent up his ‘amen’ and finished the prayer, the men responsible for the fire [a] lit the fire. When a great flame blazed, we beheld a miracle given to us to see and were preserved in order to report what had happened to the rest. [b]

[a] οἱ τοῦ πυρὸς ἄνθρωποι literally “the firemen.”

[b] i.e., the rest of the church or Christians, not just in the area by word of mouth, but perhaps through the ages by this very epistle we translate and you read here.
